China denies spying on Trump's cellphone, suggests change of phones

  • Chinese and Russian spies are listening in on President Donald Trump's phone calls according to a New York Times report

Gizmodo reports that, according to a Washington Post researcher, China spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, "If they are very anxious about iPhones being tapped, they can use Huawei".

If the U.S.is still concerned about security, Trump could "abandon all modern communication devices and cut off contact with the outside completely", she said.

The riposte came after the New York Times reported that American intelligence reports indicated that Chinese and Russian spies often listen in on President Donald Trump when he uses his Apple cellphones to chat with old friends.

None are completely secure as calls can be intercepted as they travel through cell towers, cables and switches that make up national and global phone networks, the report said.

"If they are anxious that their iPhones may be eavesdropped, they might want to use the mobile phones produced by Huawei", Hua said at the briefing.

During an appearance on CNN after Trump's tweet, New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said the paper stands by the story, adding: "The story was not boring".

While Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying did not directly address the snooping allegations, she told a briefing yesterday that "certain people in the U.S. are sparing no efforts to win the best screenplay award for the Oscars".

Quoting unnamed government officials, the New York Times claimed that president has two official iPhones that have been altered by the National Security Agency to limit their abilities and vulnerabilities, and a third personal phone that is no different from hundreds of millions of iPhones in use around the world.

It's hardly surprising, then, that both China and Russian Federation have been listening in on the president's calls.

The Chinese spokesperson also borrowed a favorite phrase of President Trump to dismiss the story, claiming the report that China spies on Trump's phone is "fake news".

It's unclear how foreign countries could tap the president's cell phone.

Despite warnings from aides that the practice is unsafe, Trump reportedly continues to use the unsecured phone.

Democrats in the House and Senate on Thursday insisted the New York Times report on Trump's cell phone usage is troubling enough to merit a congressional investigation.

The Chinese have reportedly been keen on getting members of Trump's inner circle to persuade the president to sit down more often with Premier Xi Jinping. Astute tweeters, however, noted that the message was sent from an iPhone.
