The world No.8 sent down 13 aces and 36 winners, winning 91 per cent of his first-serve points as he wrapped up victory in just under two hours.

The Swiss needed 2-1/2 hours to finally break his opponent's resistance as he claimed his 18th successive win at the tournament, which he is aiming to win for the ninth time. I know I can play at a high level and keep it up with the great players.

The Swiss crowd favourite was never able to comfortably take command against an opponent whom he had defeated in their last six meetings.

It took top seed Federer just 19 minutes to secure the opening set against Medvedev.

"I'm very happy. I think it was my best performance this week", Federer said.

But Federer lost his edge once again after Simon broke en route to squaring the decider at 4-4. But two unforced errors in a row handed Federer the match.

The Romanian, who will face Federer for the first time, had already upset 2016 champion and third seed Marin Cilic in the second round.
