  • Rescuers conduct search and rescue operation at the site where a bus has plunged off a bridge into the Yangtze River in Wanzhou on October 28

Newly-released footage from the bus' on-board surveillance camera shows how a passenger appeared to lash out at the driver who in turn retaliated, seconds before the bus crashed and plunged into the Yangtze River.

Rescuers lifted the wreck of the bus from the river on Wednesday night.

Chongqing police say the female passenger was hitting the driver because she was upset after missing her stop.

"Police said the passenger, identified as a 48-year-old woman with the surname Liu, was angry that the bus had missed her stop", the BBC reports.

Before Friday's statement from the police, footage showed the bus driving on the wrong side of the road before crashing into the water.

Due to the loss of control of the bus, which was travelling on a bridge in China, the bus swerved widely and hit a vehicle before crashing through the bridge railing and plunging around 160 feet (that's just just 20 feet shorter than the recently-inaugurated Statue of Unity, by the way) into the river.

One poster on Weibo, Wanten888, said: "If we see any passenger quarrelling with bus driver, we shouldn't stay quiet!"

The driver turned his head to face her several times in the argument. "The driver's right hand came off the steering wheel during the altercation, which led to the steering wheel turning sharply to the left".

Thirteen bodies have been pulled out of the river, but two remain missing.

A Wanzhou police statement said the driver and the passenger broke the law with their actions because they seriously endangered public safety.

After the driver refused to stop, Liu hit the driver's head with her cellphone. This seems to be the moment the driver realised he had lost control of his vehicle.
