The claim echoed what a Turkish official had earlier told the Washington Post ─ for which Khashoggi was a contributor ─ that authorities are investigating a theory the body was destroyed in acid.

The remains of slain Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi should be located and returned to his family for burial as soon as possible, the US said Thursday.

"But Jamal's death is more than a 'complication.' It is vicious, state-sponsored murder of an innocent journalist", he added, calling on the government to suspend arms deals with Riyadh and not resume "business as usual" with the kingdom.

"We are calling the entire world to put the necessary pressure, worldwide pressure, on the Saudi government to find his remains, to be able to bury him, even before finding those who are responsible, before this issue is covered up", Faith Oke, executive director of the Turkey-Arab Media Association, said Thursday.

The kingdom has faced intensifying worldwide pressure to be transparent about the death of Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post who was a critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The murder has placed strain on the decades-old alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia and tarnished the image of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the ultra-conservative kingdom's de facto ruler.

Mr Khashoggi was a Saudi reporter in self-exile in Turkey and a prominent critic of the Saudi regime.

Saudi Arabia has denied the reports in the Washington Post and New York Times.

The Crown Prince urged the advisors to preserve the US-Saudi alliance and claimed the journalist was a member of the Sunni Islamist organisation the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the Washington Post.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Istanbul's chief prosecutor, Irfan Fidan, separately called on their Saudi counterparts to identify the collaborator this week.

In a statement to the newspaper, Khashoggi's family denied he was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and said the murdered writer had himself denied this repeatedly in recent years.

But we have significant interests related to Saudi Arabia.

Khashoggi entered the consulate last month to get a document he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee. Imagine what would happen if Saudi Arabia were destabilized.

Fidan, the Istanbul prosecutor, on Wednesday said that Khashoggi was strangled shortly after entering the consulate and that his body was dismembered afterward.

President Trump has said he is "not satisfied" with the Saudi account.

Turkey has steered away from publicly blaming Saudi Arabia for the killing.
