  • PM Imran has sought a report after Maulana Sami-ul-Haq's assassination file

Religious scholar and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) chief Maulana Samiul Haq was assassinated in a targeted attack in Rawalpindi on Friday.

Haq's son, Hamidul Haq, confirmed that his father was killed on Friday.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has also denounced the assassination and sought a report from the Inspector General Punjab Police.

He said the government funded Haq's seminary for institutionalising modern curriculum, while the slain cleric had also backed the government for the anti-polio drive.

Last month, a high-level delegation from Afghanistan had called on Sami, known as the "Father of the Taliban", at Darul Uloom Haqqania and urged him to play a role in resolving the Afghan issue.

He was a religious scholar and former Senator.

He headed a political party and was twice elected as member of the Senate, the upper house of Pakistan's parliament.

His party has been an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). "He had been ill, and was a heart patient", said Hamidullah.

Maulana Sami has four brothers including Maulana Anwarul Haq who is presently responsible for the administration of Darul Uloom Haqqania - located in Akora Khattak.

Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi has also condemned the assassination.

The news of his death comes at a sensitive time, with religio-political parties out on the streets protesting the Supreme Court's acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, in a blasphemy case.

Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the "people of Afghanistan will never forget (Haq's) services for them" and his killers were the "enemies of Islam". Haq had emerged as one of Khan's allies since the PTI came to power in the province after elections in 2013.
