  • A Lion Air commercial plane has crashed in Indonesia

Search-and-rescue divers working Wednesday in Indonesian waters heard regular "pings" in what authorities said they hope will turn out to be the main body of the Lion Air plane that plunged into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff Monday morning.

The head of the National Transportation Safety Committee, Soerjanto Tjahjono, says pings detected at sea in the search for a crashed Lion Air plane are definitely from its flight recorder due to their regular pattern.

All passenger aircraft are required to have two so-called black boxes, which are in fact bright orange in color to make them easier to locate after an accident.

"We can not say how long it takes to process data in a black box, but of course we will try as soon as possible". "We will send a team there to confirm", the army chief said.

Boeing Co. experts were expected to arrive in Indonesia on Wednesday and Lion Air has said an "intense" internal investigation is underway in addition to the probe by safety regulators.

As NPR reported Tuesday, "Data from the flight tracking website FlightRadar24 shows the jet flew irregularly the day before the crash, with abnormal drops in altitude and speed just a few minutes after takeoff".

Meanwhile, the hunt continues for the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder.

"We found one of the black boxes", Soerjanto Tjahjono told AFP.

While there is no sign of survivors, rescuers have recovered some bodies and personal items, including baby shoes, the report said.

A black box from the seabed raised by the participants search operations from the naval battalion and amphibious reconnaissance battalion of the marine corps in Indonesia.

The accident has also resurrected concerns about Indonesia's patchy air safety record which led to a now-lifted ban on its planes entering U.S. and European airspace.

Indonesia's transport minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, said the technical director of Lion Air and staff who approved the flight have been removed from duty.

Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group, told reporters on Monday there was a report of "a technical issue, which had been resolved according to procedure".

Aji said that search and rescue teams have been working against high waves and strong currents, in an area spanning about 150 nautical miles.

Searchers show IDs and photos found in the water after the Lion Air JT 610 plane crashed.

Lion Air, headquartered in Indonesia, operates flights in Malaysia flying between Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Jakarta and Surabaya.
