"We've just been getting on, dealing with these issues in the appropriate way in accordance with our policies, policies that not only have reduced the number of children on Nauru, but have insured that no children are going to Nauru", Mr Morrison said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison would appear to have given into a leftist campaign to have asylum seeker children removed from Australia's offshore processing centre on the island nation of Nauru.

The Morrison government has indicated it plans to get all children off Nauru by Christmas this year.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Mr Dutton also warned that resettling refugees from Nauru in New Zealand would risk restarting the smuggling trade to Australia - where they would end up in Nauru, regardless of whether they have children.

"It will take a long time to fix the damage that has been done to these children, some of whom were born in detention and have spent their formative years surrounded by guards, steel fences and catastrophic suffering".

"You would have seen on the weekend there was a poll commissioned".

Human rights lawyer George Newhouse said his organization, National Justice Project, had taken court action to bring around 50 children to Australia for medical treatment, including children who have been taken directly from the airport to intensive care units because their organs were failing.

"I mean, 79 per cent".

"Now all of a sudden, both sides have realised there are also votes to be found in showing a little bit of compassion".

According to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, the 41 families moved to Australia included eight who were moved by court order, 21 under concessions made after legal intervention, and 12 moved at the initiative of Australian Border Force. But after more than a year of screening, only 439 have found new homes in the U.S. The children had been brought to Australia for medical treatment and none of the families had been told they could stay in Australia, she said.

The report, released today, says Australia is "not making sufficient progress" with its policies to support disadvantaged children.

"We talk about a fair chance for our children, but one in five is starting school developmentally vulnerable, one in six is living in poverty, one in seven has experienced a mental disorder, an youth suicide is the leading and increasing cause of death among children and young people today".

It accused Australia of subjecting refugees to "seriously deficient medical treatment" and "appalling conditions amounting to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment".

By resettling the child refugees, Morrison will meet a key demand from several independent lawmakers for supporting for his government. "Australia's policy has traumatised children so much that they are giving up eating and trying to kill themselves".
