  • You are a rude terrible person! Trump and CNN's Acosta get into shouting match

Tuesday's USA midterm election resulted in Trump's Republicans strengthening their grip on the Senate.

Trump made several references in his news conference to how he feels mistreated by the press.

He lashed out at CNN's Jim Acosta in particular, whom he called a "rude, bad person" after a question about Trump's rhetoric on the migrant caravan travelling to the southern U.S. border.

A staff member struggled with him for his microphone during the exchange.

"To say what you said to me it is a very awful thing that you said", Trump continued. You should not be working for CNN. "The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is frightful", he said, referring to his press secretary.

"You called yourself a nationalist, some people saw that as emboldening White Nationalists, some people say that now the Republican party is seen as supporting White Nationalists because of your rhetoric, what do you make of that?", Alcindor asked. "You should not treat people that way".

Acosta asked the president about his use of the word "invasion", which he said was "mischaracterizing" a group of migrants that remain hundreds of miles away. "You are not the best".

Acosta had been questioning Trump about his claim that a caravan of migrants posed a threat to the USA when the president turned on the journalist. "When you report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you are the enemy of the people".

Here is CNN's response, calling his attacks on the media "disturbingly un-American".

Trump appeared ready to walk out as Acosta clung to the microphone and persisted with questions about the president's views on a caravan of Central American migrants making its way to the United States border.

He also repeatedly told April Ryan to sit down in an incredibly condescending tone, like he's talking a misbehaving preschooler.
