Democrats get first House pick-up of midterms

The first time was during the Great Depression in 1934, when Democrats gained nine House and 10 Senate seats under President Roosevelt. A disproportionate number of the seats up for election were in traditionally Republican states with Democratic incumbents.

The president's strategy of emphasizing divisive issues risks backfiring on Republican candidates in suburban swing districts that probably will determine control of the House.

In the House, the Fox News Power Rankings reflect 29 "toss-up" races. Their candidate is the very high profile Beto O'Rourke and he's taking on the incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz.

Opposition to Trump proved to be more a motivating factor for Democrats than support for the president a factor for Republicans.

In a midterm election that unfolded as a referendum on President Donald Trump, Democrats are performing strongly in early returns as they try to seize back the House, but Republicans look to keep hold of the Senate. And: Will Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker win re-election? Money from both sides has poured into the race, which broke the record for the most expensive race for a House seat in history.

Long lines and malfunctioning machines marred the first hours of voting in some precincts, including in Georgia, where some voters reported waiting up to three hours to vote in the hotly contested gubernatorial election.

According to CNN, exit polling showed that two thirds of voters considered the election to be about Trump, whose approval rating remains below 50 per cent.

"This is the single most important off-year election of my lifetime".

During an election-eve rally in Cleveland on Monday, President Trump claimed that mid-term elections, which used to be "boring", have now become the "hottest thing" because of him, attributing voter turnout and media attention to his presidency.

He bet big on a xenophobic closing message, warning of an immigrant "invasion" that promised to spread violent crime and drugs across the nation.

The president's current job approval, set at 40 percent by Gallup, was the lowest at this point of any first-term president in the modern era. Still, while Bill Clinton and the Democrats lost 54 seats to Republicans in 1994, and Barack Obama and the Democrats lost 63 seats to the Republicans in 2010, it doesn't look like Donald Trump and the Republicans will lose almost that many seats to Democrats in these 2018 midterms.

Democrats have won at least 17 Republican-held districts, a significant down payment on the net gain of 23 seats they need to win the House. And in New Jersey, Democrats re-elected embattled Sen. Bob Menendez, who, less than a year ago, stood trial for federal corruption charges.

In Virginia, political newcomer Jennifer Wexton defeated two-term GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock.

Republican Mike Braun opened an early lead in the crucial Senate showdown in IN with incumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly, but the race was too close to call with just 20 per cent of the votes in. All 435 House seats are up for grabs today. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Sen.

However, Goodstein believes that the relative silence over the alleged links between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation will be broken again as soon as the Democrats take over the House.

He and the first lady were to host an evening watch party for family and friends.

A Republican victory in both chambers of Congress would be a validation for Mr Trump's polarising style, a month after he solidified a conservative majority on the Supreme Court when the Senate confirmed his nominee Brett Kavanaugh after a fight over sexual misconduct accusations against the jurist.

The political and practical stakes were sky-high. If Republicans hold their ground, stocks could gain further, with hopes of more tax cuts ahead.

Democrats would need all five of those races to go their way presuming they hold the seats they're expected to, plus pick up a seat in a longshot like Texas or Tennessee or MS to claim a majority.

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree. The total number of women serving simultaneously may exceed 100 for the first time.

Women voted considerably more in favor of their congressional Democratic candidate - with fewer than 4 in 10 voting for the Republican, according to VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 113,000 voters and about 20,000 nonvoters - conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago.

The demographic divides were coloring the political landscape in different ways.

During the campaign, President Trump made every effort to convince voters to retain the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

They face a far more hard challenge in the Senate, where they are nearly exclusively on defense in rural states where Trump remains popular.

Republicans built on their slim Senate majority and ousted four incumbent Democrats: Bill Nelson in Florida, Joe Donnelly in Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota and Claire McCaskill in Missouri. McAdams believes that Democrats failed to offer an "alternative narrative" and that might hurt them at the ballot box.

Three states could elect their first African-American governors, while several others are running LGBT candidates and Muslims.
