It's the deadliest attack on USA soldiers in the country in the past year.
Three U.S. troops were killed and four Americans were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded Tuesday in central Afghanistan, marking the deadliest day for U.S. forces in the country this year.
The NATO Resolute Support mission announced that three service members and a contractor were also wounded in the explosion today near the city of Ghazni, southwest of Kabul.
The Taliban, which control large parts of Ghazni province, claimed responsibility for the attack, which also wounded an American civilian contractor. Resolute Support said the soldier had been accidentally shot by a member of Afghan partner forces.
The provincial capital, also named Ghazni, was overrun by the militants earlier this year before being driven off by Afghan and USA forces following days of heavy fighting.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, the Taliban abducted 21 passengers from two vans that were traveling through the northern Sari Pul province, according to Habibullah Mujahidzada, a district police chief.
Army Ranger Sgt. Leandro Jasso was killed in Afghanistan over the weekend. The Taliban rampaged through the districts, targeting members of the local Hazara militia and burning thousands of homes, before Afghan forces launched a belated counterattack. Last month CBS News joined USA forces on the battlefield in Nangarhar Province.
The bombing happened in an area where U.S. Special Forces have been working with Afghan commandos.
The number of American casualties has fallen dramatically since the end of 2014 when Afghan forces took over from US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation combat troops to secure the country. It also brings the total of USA troops killed in combat in the Afghanistan War up to ten this year.
Some 14,000 US soldiers are now serving in Afghanistan, where the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat mission in 2014.
