Russian Federation to deploy new missiles to Crimea as Ukraine tensions rise

  • Russia announces new S 400 surface to air missiles deployment in Crimea

The two sides have been in negotiations for months, but Kudlow described them as being stalemated until just a few weeks ago.

"They should be spending much more money", the president concluded.

Russian Federation annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and has bolstered the Black Sea peninsula's military defenses with three S-400 systems since 2017.

Turkey, as well as the UN General Assembly, viewed the annexation as illegal.

Kiev has demanded the release of the sailors and urged Western allies to impose further sanctions on Moscow.

Both countries said at an in camera session of European diplomats in Brussels that now it is necessary to develop "measures to consolidate confidence".

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan discussed tensions in the Kerch Strait near Crimea with his United States counterpart Donald Trump, Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko in separate phone calls and emphasized the importance of a diplomatic solution to tensions between the two neighbors, a Turkish presidency source said Wednesday.

The Ukrainian Parliament approved the introduction of martial law after Poroshenko reassured some skeptical lawmakers that it would not be used to curb civil liberties or delay elections scheduled for next year.

Putin said Russia's border guards were "fulfilling their military duty" when they seized three Ukrainian ships off Crimea last week.

Azamatov also said that all of the detainees should be recognised as prisoners of war as they are all military personnel.

"This was a provocation which was certainly organized by the sitting officials [in Kiev], including the president", Putin said at an investment forum in Moscow.

Ukraine said its ships did nothing wrong and have every right to use the strait without Russian permission.

Because they have a system I guess.

Meanwhile, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert urged European states to do more to support Ukraine and said Washington wants to see tougher enforcement of sanctions against Russian Federation.

Putin on Wednesday broke his silence on the maritime clash, blaming it on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's desire to get re-elected. "In economic terms we need to decide if we are going to follow the economic globalisation and free market or if we are going to choose unilateralism and protectionism". But for now the unity of the 28 is key.

The statement was strongly worded but will disappoint some European Union members hoping for a harder joint line, after officials had earlier said the bloc was considering new sanctions against Moscow.

The United States has previously said that Russia's deployment of the missile systems to Crimea is "not good".

A Reuters journalist reported seeing a Russian warship deploying near Crimea.

Vadim Astafyev, a spokesman for Russia's southern military district, was cited by Russian news agencies as saying that a new battalion of advanced S-400 surface-to-air missiles would be delivered to Crimea soon and become operational by year's end.
