While the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony officially kicked off the nation's holiday season, the White House has already begun celebrating. She was one of dozens of florists and decorators chosen for the volunteer job.

She didn't lash out at her critics, nor did she back down from her decision.

"And you are all very welcome to visit the White House, the "people's house".

"We are in the 21st Century and everybody has a different taste", she said. "In real life they look even more attractive and you are all very welcome to visit the White House, the people's house".

After welcoming the 2018 White House Christmas tree - a 19-foot tall tree hailing from Mountain Top Fraser Fir farm in Newland, North Carolina - earlier this month, First Lady Melania Trump unveiled the White House's Christmas decor on Monday, Nov. 26. The first lady will do the honors, ' he said, gesturing to his wife, standing next to him in a white coat with a white turtle neck underneath, white leather gloves, white boots, and with her hair in an updo.

Another subject was social media etiquette, a cornerstone of her "Be Best" campaign (along with opioid use and well-being), with Melania remarking that it's important to be "respectful and kind".

Along with Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar took part in the town hall discussion at the university in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Also participating is Dianna Hart, whose daughter, Demi Lovato, has been vocal about her struggle with addiction.

At the panel event, Mrs Trump also spoke about her son Barron, saying the 12-year-old is "all into sports" so did not spend time on social media.

After listing the startling statistics on the reality of the epidemic, Trump struck a hopeful tone.

Her words were greeted with laughter, cheers and applause from the audience.
