  • Former US President George Bush dies at age 94, family spokesman says

Bush, a Republican president from 1989 to 1993 who was credited for contributing to the end of the Cold War, was the oldest living president in history.

Mr Bush's death was announced on Twitter by his spokesman Jim McGrath.

The news came from an official statement from Bush's office late Friday evening.

"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died".

The elder Bush saw his popularity swell with the United States' success in the Gulf War in 1991, only to watch it evaporate in a brief but deep recession. Bush pulled in only 168 electoral votes that year, compared to Bill Clinton - then the governor of Arkansas - who collected 370 electoral votes.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush died in April, at which time the former president had to bury the love of his life. The two were married 70 years.

Bush 41 was hospitalized at Houston Methodist Hospital for an infection that spread to his blood. He continued to suffer with ill health during the following months.

Populist FDR Democrat Brandon Presley says Former President Bush served America "with dignity both home and overseas".

Former President Barack Obama also issued a statement calling Bush 41 "a patriot and humble servant". While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude.

After retiring from public life, Bush fulfilled a wartime pledge to one day jump out of a plane for fun and famously went skydiving on his 75th, 80th, 85th and 90th birthdays.

Bush Sr. served two years as Ronald Reagan's vice president before upgrading to the most powerful position in the government. One of the youngest pilots in the Navy, he flew 58 missions off the carrier USS San Jacinto.
