  • Fans fuming at split decision as Deontay Wilder retains WBC heavyweight title

"Why not give a great fighter another opportunity?"

After 12 pulsating rounds, the judges scored the matchup 115-111 to Wilder, another 114-112 to Englishman Fury, and the third British judge scoring 113-113.

"That man is a fearsome puncher, but I avoided his shots tonight".

When the fight is over, the victor will leave the ring as the WBC champion and "the man that beat the man" to become (or retain) the lineal title with Anthony Joshua waiting across the pond with the WBO, IBF and WBA straps.

Promoter Frank Warren said: "I'd love the rematch". "So I am happy either or, I'm happy to fight Joshua or rematch Fury". "We are two great champions". That's the second best heavyweight in the world behind me'.

Clearly seeing the fight as just another hurdle to negotiate in his bid to face Anthony Joshua to become undisputed champion, Wilder added: "It's definitely the most important [fight of his career], but not the most hard".

The consensus was that Fury outboxed Wilder despite his 12th round knockdown
The consensus was that Fury outboxed Wilder despite his 12th round knockdown

Wilder landed just 71 of 430 punches thrown, or 17 per cent.

On the way down the American caught the challenger with a left and Fury seemed to be knocked down and out.

Wilder, having successfully defended his title, said he hoped for a rematch, either in the United Kingdom or U.S., and also extended the same gratitude to Fury for a fight that will surely live long in the memory.

Within minutes of the fight's conclusion being reached, people were comparing Fury's bounce back from the canvas to The Undertaker's famous recovery tactic of appearing to be knocked clean out, before sitting ominously back up as his opponent celebrated.

However in the ninth round, Wilder finally made his mark, dropping Fury with a short hook that had the fans on their feet.

Incredibly however, Fury managed to pick himself up and clear his head to survive the remainder of the round and escape with a draw.
