  • Bertrum and Allison Jean speak at a press conference following Amber Guyger being indicted for their son Botham's murder

A grand jury indicted Amber Guyger for murder, Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson told reporters in a press conference Friday afternoon.

On Sept. 6, Guyger claimed she shot 26-year-old Botham Jean in self defense, mistaking him for an intruder. Allison, his mother, said her country "has been on alert with the expectation that the grand jury will have returned with an indictment of murder".

DA Johnson went on to explain that murder constitutes someone "intentionally and knowingly" committing a crime, whereas manslaughter involves "recklessly doing something".

"At the moment of the shooting it was a knowing ... offense", Johnson said, according to CNN.

Leach said the bond was restored after she was charged with murder.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall says her department feels the "anguish about this hard and tragic event".

"We recognize and understand the national discord regarding the relationship between law enforcement and the communities we serve", Hall said.

He says he believes the grand jury was swayed by more than facts and thinks political pressure played a role in the murder indictment.

Guyger was sacked from the police department after the shooting.

According to an arrest warrant, Guyger said she had got off on the wrong floor and because it was dark, she believed she "had encountered a burglar".

Allison Jean said "I look forward to the next step, which is a conviction of murder of Amber Guyger and also of a penalty, the proper penalty, that will cause her to reflect on what she has done,". He said Jean's mother testified before the grand jury, which he described as highly unusual.

"He didn't deserve it, he was seated in his own apartment".

A prosecutor says a former Dallas police officer indicted on a murder charge for fatally shooting a black man after mistaking his apartment for her own has turned herself in.

While Guyger has changed details of the shooting over time, she now claims that she returned home from a shift, mistook Jean's apartment for her own (it was located directly above her own), somehow gained access to the apartment and then shot Jean, fearing he was burglar.

A former police officer in Dallas, in the southwestern US state of Texas, was charged Friday with murder in the shooting death of her unarmed black neighbor. Jean died at Baylor University Medical Center after Guyger made a 911 phone call. She put her key in the lock, and the door, which was slightly ajar, opened. A struggle began and Guyger fired her Taser at Perez, who then wrested it away from her. It took 16 months, Johnson said, for the case against Roy Oliver to go to trial.

Lee Merritt, an attorney retained by Jean's family, alleged at a news conference days after the shooting that Guyger's version of events conflict with what he had learned about the altercation.

The family's federal suit argues Guyger used excessive force in the shooting and contends the department did not give her adequate training.
