  • A Russian soldier stands guard in front of an S300 surface-to-air missile battery like those delivered to Syria after a September Israeli strike during which a Russian aircraft was accidentally downed

Correspondents of the official Syrian Arab News Agency went on to report that the anti-air response was continuing, with a number of hostile targets destroyed without having achieved their goal.

Syrian and Russian media reported earlier that the Bashar al-Assad regime's air defense systems had neutralized some targets that were conducting airstrikes in the country's south.

The area where the incident is said to have occurred is where Lebanon's Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran, has its communications and logistics hub for southern Syria near the Israeli border, according to two senior regional intelligence sources.

The Israeli military refused to comment on the raid, but denied a report in Russian media that an Israeli plane had been shot down.

The source said that all of the missiles aimed at the town of Kiswah, south of the capital Damascus, were shot down before landing on their targets.

Last week IDF sources said security personnel reported the presence of some 20,000 Iranian-trained Syrian armed forces in the Syrian Golan Heights, possibly preparing for a conflict with Israel.

Israeli jets bombed several areas in southern Syria and near Damascus on Thursday drawing retaliatory fire from the ground, a monitoring group said.

.

Another missile hit the area of Harfa, near the Israeli border, where there is a Syrian military base, the UK-based monitor said.

Syria complained to the United Nations about the incident, blaming Israel.

An unconfirmed report from Ria Novosti said that an Israeli Air Force jet and four Israeli missiles were taken down.

Israeli air strikes inside Syrian territory have drawn criticism and recently caused tensions with Russian Federation, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes in neighboring Syria against what it says are Iranian targets.

After the September attack, during which Russian servicemen were killed by friendly fire, Moscow was quick to equip Damascus with the S-300 air defence missile system.

Since then Israel has been very careful with its operation over Syria.

The side behind the attack is not yet clear, but Israel has repeatedly targeted military positions in Syria, including in Kisweh.

There was no evidence that the S-300 batteries were used to intercept Thursday night's missiles.
