  • Wilder retains WBC heavyweight belt after battling to draw against Fury

Tyson Fury was denied one of the greatest comebacks in history when his WBC heavyweight title fight against Deontay Wilder at the Staples Center in Los Angeles was scored a draw.

The knockdown in the 12th would have turned 99% of the world heavyweights' lights out and Wilder looked totally stunned to see his rival come back for more after crashing to the canvas and the final bell brought roars of appreciation from the satisfied crowd.

One judge scored the bout in Wilder's favor 115-111, while the second judge scored the bout 114-110 for Fury, and the final judge scored the fight 113-113.

In 2015, Fury shocked the world when he won the titles of the three most important ranking boxing organisations, the IBF, WBO and WBA by beating long-reigning Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko in a unanimous decision.

The British boxer was the better man throughout, making the American miss over and over.

It looked for a moment Fury had been dropped for the count, but the Briton miraculously rose as though unaffected by a concussive punch from arguably the hardest hitter in combat sports. "I came here tonight and I fought my heart out".

The clamour for a rematch with Fury may well prove to be irresistible.

"The world knows who the real WBC champion is".

"I saw his eyes roll into the back of his head".

"The rematch I guarantee I'm going to get him".

Wilder managed to turn things up and fire back in the seventh round, as a couple of flurries forced Fury's back to the ropes and would've put him in more danger if not for clinching.

"I don't know if [a rematch] will be my next fight but would love it to be".

While both men felt they had done enough to win the fight, both accepted the result.

"It was what it was", Fury said.

Deontay Wilder has built a name and a fortune by leaving Heavyweight fighters flat out at his feet.

The Brit had to give up his titles after having to fight depression and a suspension for a failed drugs test and took almost three years before getting back in the ring following the Klitschko win.

Late in the round, Fury threw his hands in the air and wagged his tongue, imploring Wilder to come at him. He vacated his titles and spent 2 ½ years out of the ring before getting sober.

Without any question, Wilder passed the toughest challenge in his last fight. "I don't really have much use for it, I'm not interested in becoming a millionaire or a billionaire".

The opening rounds were to Fury's liking.

The bout was a rare meeting of two unbeaten heavyweight stars in their apparent primes, with both fighters putting aside caution and the typical squabbles over money or belts to stage one of the most compelling matchups in the glamour division's recent history.

Fury recovered well however and regained his composure to resume where he had left off.
