Coach Ryan Day now serves as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, according to the school's website. Ohio State had not made Spence's top seven, released the summer prior to his senior season, but Meyer made Spence a priority immediately after being hired and secured the five-star's commitment just three weeks into the job.
Meyer guided Ohio State to the national championship in 2014 after doing so at Florida in 2006 and 2008.
Meyer said a lot of things contributed to his decision to retire, including the Zach Smith situation, but he mostly focused on his headaches.
When Day was the acting head coach, he said his goal was to rock the boat as little as possible.
The Buckeyes finished the season 12-1, but Meyer was not on the sideline for three games because he was serving a suspension stemming from his handling of domestic violence allegations against one of his former assistants.
It's not the first time that Meyer's health has had an impact on his coaching career.
When asked if he would ever coach again, Meyer initially told reporters that was a "complicated question". Meyer initially said he didn't know about the abuse when he fired Smith, but it turns out he might have known about it and done nothing.
"I dreamt of it", Meyer said Sunday.
Meyer owns an 85-9 record in seven seasons with the Buckeyes.
"It was interesting because I've never had him as a head coach, so my first thought was, 'I wonder how this will work out?' but I definitely think he can do it", Murphy said when Day was named interim earlier this year.
A big reason for his hire at Ohio State is his penchant for running a high-tempo offense, which he's been running for the Buckeyes alongside co-offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson.
Everyone had to chase Meyer, who would win two titles, and that chase led to to the hire of Nick Saban, who arrived in the SEC two years after Meyer got to Florida.
He came to Ohio State in 2012 and took over a program recovering from scandal. Citing concerns for his health and a desire to be with his family, Meyer resigned but eventually changed his mind and coached one more seasons with the Gators before stepping away in 2011.
His contract was extended in April by two years through 2022, increasing Meyer's salary to $7.6 million in 2018 with annual 6 percent raises.
A former defensive back at Cincinnati, Meyer's swift rise to coaching prominence prior to Florida was evident in his two years at Utah.
