An Urban Meyer rival is so happy for him

  • Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer to announce retirement

But he has nearly no head coach credentials.

But the controversy that Meyer played a big part in creating was never going to completely go away.

Brown said he became close to Meyer when he was coaching at Texas and Meyer was at Florida. He certainly has a great offensive mind, but he's not Meyer, who outside of Nick Saban, is the best coach in college football.

The university hasn't given any other details at this time.

Despite the controversial blip in his career, Meyer easily had one of the most successful coaching careers of all time. He also says knowing assistant coach Ryan Day would be his successor made the decision easier. He served the same role with Kelly in Philadelphia in 2016.

Day coached the quarterbacks at both National Football League stops. Being from Akron, Ohio, the man has always been a big-time Ohio State Buckeyes supporter.

Ohio State will now turn to Day, a second-year Ohio State assistant who had never before been a head coach before he stepped in for Meyer this season.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith opened a news conference about Urban Meyer's retirement, saying the coach has exceeded expectations and raised the level competition in the Big Ten. Investigators said they found Meyer protected the ex-wide receivers coach for years during allegations of domestic violence, a drug problem and poor job performance.

The announcement of Urban Meyer's retirement on Tuesday was shocking only in the moment Ohio State chose to drop the news, not in the substance of the news itself, which has been at least a possibility for months.

Given what happened after he cited health reasons for leaving Florida, it seems like Meyer knows enough to be more careful this time around. Then here in [2014] I thought we were going.

Ohio State fans will likely agree with Day's assessment. He tweeted Tuesday he is still committed to the Buckeyes.

"And I saw that in Ryan Day", Meyer said. "He gets his coaching points in, but he doesn't do a lot of yelling".

Former Boston College quarterback Tyler Murphy, who was with Day for a year after transferring from Florida, remembers Day as a more laid-back coach as well, someone who doesn't yell unless he's not seeing effort from his players or is forced to repeat himself multiple times. "I take this responsibility very seriously".

"Besides my parents, you were one of the most influential people to touch my life and I'm appreciative of that", former Buckeyes linebacker Joshua Perry wrote on Twitter. There was Iowa in 2017 and Purdue and Maryland this year, sloppy performances that cost Ohio State playoff bids.
