  • Defections along the closely guarded inter Korean border are rare

Moon said Trump had asked the South Korean president to convey those messages to Kim if the North Korean leader visits Seoul this year as he has promised to do.

The president tells reporters that there are three sites under consideration, but he's not identifying them.

A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea early on Saturday, the South Korean military said.

President Donald Trump arrives for the morning working session on the second day of the G20 economic summit on July 8, 2017, in Hamburg, Germany.

Despite the warming ties, it remains unclear whether the North's leader Kim Jong Un will make his first-ever visit to the South this year, as Seoul is hoping. He said, "We are getting along very well".

South Korean President Moon Jae-In also spoke highly of the meeting between Trump and Kim at a press conference after the G20 Summit.

Moon's approval rating has declined for nine straight weeks since hitting 65.3 percent in late September following his third summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang.

"I think we're going to do one fairly [soon] - you know, into January, February, I think", Trump told reporters with him on Air Force One.

Trump and Xi agreed that "great progress has been made with respect to North Korea", the White House statement added.

The military said no unusual North Korean military activity was reported on Saturday. "It is North Korea which should clearly state and show by taking actions, then I am sure that there will be no reason why the Security Council of the United Nations will continue to impose the sanction on North Korea". But critics say the South risks conceding some of its conventional military strength before North Korea takes any meaningful steps on denuclearization, as the larger nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang seemingly drift into a stalemate.

A team of South Korean officials boarded to investigate how the North's rail network can be modernised and potentially linked up to the South.

Talks on a follow-up to the two leaders' first meeting in June in Singapore have been underway since July, a senior USA official told Reuters in October.

North Korea has taken few concrete steps to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
