  • Asian markets tumble, China tech hit after Huawei arrest

Growing tensions between the US and China, Russia, and North Korea have caused global concern. "It pulls in: Who is going to be the world leader essentially".

The detention of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, comes after American authorities reportedly launched an investigation into suspected Iran sanctions violations by Huawei, which was already under scrutiny by USA intelligence officials who deemed the company a national security threat. "The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the U.S. and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou", a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy said in a statement.

Houlden added that Canada "doesn't have much wiggle room" when it comes to extradition requests from south of the border, noting that a Canadian judge does not have to rule on Wanzhou's guilt or innocence before handing her over to US authorities for trial.

As a result, some of the closest allies of the US, such as the U.K., Australia and New Zealand have banned or restricted Huawei on its 5G networks.

The Dow Jones fell more than 700 points on Thursday, as news broke of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou's arrest and planned extradition to the US.

Donald Trump last month reinstated all the USA sanctions on Iran that had been removed under a 2015 nuclear deal. Washington has been pushing other countries not to buy the equipment from Huawei, arguing that the company may be working stealthily for Beijing's spymasters.

Jiang said he does not believe Meng lives in Vancouver or Canada.

Once an extradition process has started, it's a matter for the courts and political actors can't just call up a judge to demand Meng's release, said Gordon Houlden, director of the China Institute at the University of Alberta.

"The company believes the Canadian and United States legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

Canadian authorities on Wednesday arrested Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou over the weekend. New Zealand and Australia already have.

But suspicions persist. Concern now centres on the deployment of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks, where Huawei is at the cutting edge.

The Israeli actress Gal Gadot also became the company's USA brand ambassador for its Mate 10 Pro smartphone, an announcement that came after AT&T pulled out of a deal to sell Huawei's phones.

"The Chinese have difficulty accepting that there is really no possibility of interference in a decision like this", he said.

But Huawei is not alone in having to deal with privacy troubles.

The White House says Trump and his close aides were not aware the U.S. planned to place an extradition request for Meng ahead of his dinner with Xi on Saturday. They urged him to keep Huawei off Canada's next-generation network.

Meng, Huawei's chief financial officer, faces possible extradition to the United States, according to Canadian authorities.

He said he was not sure whether Trump - who had trumpeted his summit with Xi as "amazing and productive" as he flew back to Washington - was also aware. It remains privately held and describes itself as employee-owned, though its ownership structure is unknown.
