While it will be the hosts who will be happy at the end of the first day's play, India might have more reason to worry with a star performer suffering a minor setback in Adelaide on day one.

This is Australia's least experienced top seven in their 429 Tests since World Series Cricket - and there were hopes Marsh would provide the veteran nous required against an Indian attack regarded as the best the touring nation has brought to Australia.

Mitchell Starc (8 batting) was giving Head company at close of play with Australia trailing by 59 runs against India's first innings effort of 250 all out, the highlight of which was Cheteshwar Pujara's fighting hundred.

India finished the opening day at 250-9, on the back of a battling 123 from Cheteshwar Pujara, and they did not add to the total on Friday.

KL Rahul's (2) poor run in global cricket continued as he edged an away-swinger from Josh Hazlewood to Aaron Finch at second slip. However, Pujara held firm at the other end and stitched a solid stand with Ravichandran Ashwin for the seventh wicket. All three of KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, and skipper Virat Kohli got out, fishing outside the off-stump. Hazlewood and Starc kept teasing Vijay and Pujara by bowling full outside off and soon reaped rewards for the consistency.

Cape Town - The term "practice like you play" is one that is often heard in sport, and Indian captain Virat Kohli clearly does just that. On a couple of occasions, he drove the ball to get the score moving but ultimately this led to his dismissal. The limited-overs southpaw announced his arrival with an eye-pleasing cover drive before slapping Cummins' pacy bouncer for a six.

He nearly certainly will have a chance to redeem himself in the second innings in Adelaide but there are concerns Ashwin has a mental hold on him, having dismissed the left-hander five times at an average of 28.

Ajinkya Rahane also couldn't contribute and became Hazlewood's second victim for 13 runs. He targeted Nathan Lyon by hoicking the offspinner over deep backward square leg but he could not control his shot and he was rescued when Marcus Harris went over the ropes in trying to catch him. But Rohit was dismissed for 37 and Pant, for 25.

"But they also bowled well in the first two sessions".

The duo could add 45 runs for the fifth wicket.

The big moment came in the 40th over, when Ashwin got Khawaja's wicket. He was aided well by the pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah (2/34) and Ishant Sharma (2/31). The 30-year-old kept most of the strike but there was still no recklessness from the Saurashtra batsman. Smith and Warner saved their side's blushes on so many occasions, having scored a combined 12,562 Test runs (including 44 centuries).

He was run out attempting a quick single on the second-last ball of the day by a diving Pat Cummins. While Australia will be looking to bowl out India as quickly as possible.
