  • SpaceX halts U.S. satellite launch for national security mission

SpaceX was poised to send its Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, with a live webcast that started streaming about 15 minutes before the intended liftoff. It was initially delayed because of "upper level winds", according to the Space X Twitter account, before eventually being cancelled for the day because of an "out of family reading on first stage sensors".

No other details were immediately known.

This launch is the first of 32 planned Global Positioning System satellites that will be launched into space to replace old ones now in orbit.

Four different companies have rocket launches slated for 18 December: Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin, France's Arianespace and United Launch Alliance, the joint venture between Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp.

Space X's Falcon 9 rocket will now launch tomorrow from the same site, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Like with the GPS III Space Vehicle, New Shephard's ship and payload remain in good condition. The completely re-designed next generation of satellites are also eight times more resistant to jamming and can be updated while in orbit.

As the US enters a new era with the declaration of space as a warfighting domain, SMC is re-architecting efforts which will manage other significant USA acquisition agility initiatives in order to drive innovation within the space enterprise and speed the delivery of new capabilities to warfighters.

The full suite of GPS III satellites is expected to be operational by 2021.

The launch was scrubbed last minute on Tuesday.

Blue Origin planned to launch its New Shepard rocket with NASA-sponsored science on board in Texas. But as launch time approached, it made the decision to stand down and the Falcon 9 was taken from the launch pad to allow engineers to get a closer look at the issue.

SpaceX sued the U.S. Air Force in 2014 in protest over the military's award of a multibillion-dollar, non-compete contract for 36 rocket launches to United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Boeing and Lockheed.

What: French company Arianespace is using a Soyuz rocket to take a satellite into space for the French Defense Ministry.
