Trump tells GOP leaders he won't sign bill to avoid shutdown

"We'll soon take up a simple measure that will continue government funding into February so that we can continue this vital (border security) debate after the new Congress has convened" in January, said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Facing heat from a bunch of xenophobic freaks in the Freedom Caucus, on Thursday Trump told outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan he won't sign the short-term funding bill passed by the Senate late last night until he gets his $5 billion for more wall.

While Trump has not said he would sign the funding extension, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway signaled Wednesday that he may consider it, saying that "he'll take a look at that, certainly". Congress had been on track to fund the government but lurched Thursday when Trump, after a rare lashing from conservative supporters, declared he would not sign a bill without the funding.

"One way or the other, we will win on the Wall!" By then perhaps Trump will have backed all the way down, rationalizing the move by suggesting (as he already has) that the Pentagon can pay for the wall, or that Mexico is paying for it "indirectly," or indeed, that it's more or less already in place. But that outcome is not assured and is not the same as his campaign promise that Mexico would pay for the wall, which the country has refused to do.

In a tweet on Friday, Trump said: "The Democrats are trying to belittle the concept of a Wall, calling it old fashioned". It is nearly certain to be rejected by the Senate.

But on Thursday morning, the future of that plan was thrust into question after Trump tweeted his frustration at having to swallow another spending measure that doesn't include funds for the wall.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says that "at this moment, the president does not want to go further" on a proposed budget deal "without border security, which includes steel slats or a wall".

The Senate's top Republican and Democratic leaders began negotiating new proposals, and talks were expected to continue. They are convinced that with Democrats poised to hold the majority in the House next year, Republicans' negotiating stance would be even weaker than it is now. A CR is a "continuing resolution" extending government funding.

The White House said Trump would not travel to Florida on Friday as planned for the Christmas holiday if the government were shutting down.

Congress faces a Friday deadline to fund a portion of the government or risk a partial shutdown. "Well I'm gonna b--, cry, piss and moan just because he's a Republican and wants it".

Democrats have used those words to blame any shutdown on the president, believing it would hurt him politically.

With Pelosi's backing the Senate-passed bill likely has enough support for House approval with votes mostly from Democratic lawmakers, who are still the minority, and some Republicans. Today the House Republicans voted and won, 217-185.

"In 2014, I helped put together and signed a $25 billion deal to fund a border wall", reads the post from a group called The Right View Of Washington State. "The Senate's voice vote on the CR was strongly rejected by the conference this morning".

At issue in the standoff is money for nine of 15 Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies, including the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Interior, Agriculture, State and Justice, as well as national parks and forests. "We're going to have that fight, but we're going to have that fight after the midterms, '" Meadows said.

Congress did pass legislation to fund much of the government through the current budget year, until next October 1.

A large part of the government is already funded through next September, including the military, public health care agencies, education, and veterans' programs.
