Apple will manufacture high-end iPhones in India in 2019

  • iPhone XR Accounted for 32 Percent of Total iPhone Sales in First Month of U.S. Availability

An announcement to this effect was also made in the Tamil Nadu state cabinet meeting that was held in Chennai on Monday, chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami.

Importantly, Foxconn will be assembling the most expensive models, such as devices in the flagship iPhone X family, the source said, potentially taking Apple's business in India to a new level.

Reuters reported that Foxconn now makes Xiaomi phones in India, while Apple already uses Taiwanese Wistron Corporation's facilities in Bengaluru to manufacturer the company's lower-end iPhone SE and iPhone 6S devices.

Apple's cheaper iPhone models (SE and 6S) are already made in India, but this is the first time newer models, like the X family, will be produced there.

The decision to have iPhones manufactured in India may have something to do with the on-going trade war between the USA and China, according to sources close to Reuters. Last year, the figures revealed that 86% of new iPhone units were bought in the states to upgrade an older model, and 11% switched from Android.

Based on these percentages of iPhone sales, the new 2017 iPhones yielded 69% of total iPhone market share while this years iPhones represented 65% share, a drop of a few percentage points.

Apple did not immediately respond to a Fortune request for comment on the report.

This is a substantial 33 percent jump in the number of Android users who switched to iOS after the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were launched previous year, and a whopping 45 percent increase when compared to Android switchers in the month after the launch of iPhone X.

Full details of Apple's deal with Hon Hai are not yet clear and could change. Additionally, it is also not confirmed whether the production will be confined to assembly or include some component production in the country.
