Department Of Homeland Security Promises Changes To Protect Migrant Children

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Friday visited the Texas border city where an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy was detained with his father before dying in government custody.

Following the child's first discharge from the hospital, both he and the father were put into a temporary holding facility where agents were aware of the child's illness and provided the child with his medication. He was initially diagnosed with a common cold following a medical evaluation.

Felipe Gomez Alonzo died Monday at a New Mexico hospital after suffering coughing, vomiting and fever, authorities said.

The congressman said promises of more medical personnel do not sufficiently address the systematic and management problems within CBP that allowed for the deaths of Jackelin and Felipe.

The Guatemalan government has been notified and is in touch with the father and family members in Guatemala, CBP said.

The previous instance saw seven-year-old Jakelin Caal, also from Guatemala, die just hours after being taken into custody.

Felipe González Morales of Chile, who was appointed special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants in June 2017 by the UN Human Rights Council, said American authorities "must ensure that an in-depth, independent investigation" of the girl's death takes place. He died at the hospital shortly after midnight, CBP said, adding that the official cause of death is not known.

The law can not save these children, but it should punish their tormentors, us.

"Many questions remain unanswered, including how many children have died in CBP custody". But like others in the rural farming village of Yalambojoch, he decided that traveling with a child was the only way out. US officials said his father declined medical assistance because the child had been feeling better.

His death came amid a dispute over border security between President Trump and Democrats in Congress that has closed much of the government and led to hundreds of migrants being released from detention centres.

"I need to see him soon and I'm very sad because he died", she said.

Eight-year-old Felipe Gómez Alonzo's first week in the USA ended up being the last week of his short life.

The letter was addressed to incoming Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and said the request came "in light of the deaths of two young children in Border Patrol custody this month".

He crossed the border along with his father and they were detained 3.29 miles from the port of entry in El Paso, Texas, on December 18.

In its extended statement Tuesday about Felipe Gómez Alonzo, the agency said the boy and his father received welfare checks at each of the stations where they were held.

But the Trump administration said Caal's death showed the danger of her journey and the family's decision to cross the border illegally.

In a statement released Wednesday, Nielsen called the death of 8-year-old Guatemalan boy Felipe Alonzo-Gomez a "deeply concerning and heartbreaking" "tragedy" and said she would enable more thorough medical screenings for children who are apprehended at the border.
