  • Napoli coach Ancelotti: We’ll walk off with racist abuse

Napoli said on their club website that the Senegalese player was subject to "racist chants" during the match, without giving further details, while their coach Carlo Ancelotti said some fans made animal noises throughout the entire game.

A third game will also be played with the San Siro's "curva" section - the part of the ground popular with Inter's "ultras" - closed.

Serie A announced that no spectators will be admitted to the Nerazzurri's next two games against Sassuolo on January 19 and Bologna on February 3 in response to Wednesday's incidents, which it says were not isolated.

"Mazzoleni applied the rules perfectly", Gravina told Sky Sports Italia after the game.

"We condemn all forms of both physical and verbal violence, with the aggravating circumstance of racial discrimination".

Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti added that it was the sort of behaviour which was holding back Italian football.

Police named the victim as 39-year-old Daniele Belardinelli, and the country's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said he believes Italian football needs to send out a "strong message" in the wake of the trouble at San Siro, with the possibility of suspending football for "fruitful reflection".

Also, Koulibaly was suspended for two matches - one for the red card and one for applauding the referee.

Inter won Wednesday's match 1-0. "No to racism and any other offence and discrimination", he added, while Koulibaly's Napoli teammate Dries Mertens said the Senegalese was "one of the most lovely people" he knew.

"(Koulibaly) was insulted for the whole match (with racist boos), we asked the authorities to intervene but only announcements (to the public) were made, they didn't go for the temporary suspension of the match as we had requested, and that I think was the right thing to do", Ancelotti said speaking to reporters after the match.

"Maybe we have to take matters into our own hands next time and stop play ourselves".

"There was a odd atmosphere, as we asked three times for play to be suspended, they had announcements with the speaker three times".

"Really!? Koulibaly racially abused at San Siro". Too often there are four idiots starting these chants.

"Dealing with racism must be a priority for the new regime at FIGC, the Italian FA, an FA that in the past has had a bad record of dealing with racism, where a former President Carlo Tavecchi served a six month UEFA ban for racist remarks".

But the drama surrounding the match had little to do with football.
