The Times, which was also affected by the attack, quoted a "source with knowledge of the situation" saying the attack was meant to disable infrastructure, rather than steal information.

In South Florida, delivery of the New York Times and the Palm Beach Post was also affected because the Sun Sentinel also prints their newspapers here.

"We believe the intention of the attack was to disable infrastructure, more specifically servers, as opposed to looking to steal information", the individual said.

The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and other titles belonging to Tribune Publishing suffered distribution delays on Saturday after the company detected the malware a day earlier.

While the Times noted it was aware of the problem on Friday, its technology teams attempted to fix it, but couldn't resolve the matter before production was set to begin.

Tribune Publishing news websites were not affected, and no customer information was compromised, the company said Saturday. Light wrote that systems still used through the paper's former owner, Tribune Publishing, had been compromised by the virus Thursday night and spread to critical systems by Friday.

A cyber attack caused major printing and delivery disruptions on Saturday at the Los Angeles Times and other major U.S. newspapers, including ones owned by the Tribune Publishing Co. The Orlando Sentinel subscribers received their papers on time, according to a Tribune Publishing executive.

Representatives for the Los Angeles Times said they had no additional information or comment, while Tribune Publishing representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The virus also affected the paper's digital replica online.

The San Diego Union-Tribune is said to have been hit particularly hard, as 85 to 90 percent of its Saturday edition didn't reach its subscribers.
