  • Netanyahu Could Cut Unprecedented Brazil Visit Over Politics At Home

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, left center, is received by Brazil's President-elect Jair Bolsonaro at the military base Fort Copacabana, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Friday, Dec. 28, 2018.

Netanyahu, the first Israeli prime minister to visit Brazil, flew in to Rio de Janeiro to meet with Bolsonaro, an ideological ally who takes office on January 1 after his election victory in October. An embassy transfer could put at risk lucrative Brazilian poultry and halal meat exports to Arab countries.

The Secretary of Public Security in Brasilia told the Associated Press that they are expecting as many as 500,000 people to attend the ceremony.

Rio de Janeiro, Dec 29 (IANS): Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu here on Friday agreed to establish a strategic partnership between the two countries.

He added: "We are happy to be able to start a new era between Israel and a great power called Brazil".

Netanyahu, before boarding his flight to Brazil, expressed similar optimism about meeting Bolsonaro.

Netanyahu said that his visit to Brazil "heralds a historic moment". "We want to be your partners in this effort, we think our cooperation can give both our people tremendous benefits - in the economy, employment, security, agriculture, water, industry, in every domain of human endeavor".

The Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, and most countries in the world back a longstanding consensus that Jerusalem's status can only be resolved through negotiations and as part of an Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

The survey, carried out by polling company Datafolha, indicates that 42 percent of citizens "completely agree" with the idea of tighter control over immigration to Brazil, with an additional 24 percent saying they somewhat agree with the statement.

Bolsonaro discussed Israel during a meeting in Rio with Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, late last month.

"The visit will bring an important political message: a turnaround in Israel's relations with the largest country in Latin America".
