Pelosi says Democrats will give "nothing for the wall"

A meeting Wednesday afternoon between White House officials and congressional leaders has wrapped up with no progress made on border security funding or reopening the federal government. At the start of his cabinet meeting, Trump said the border was "like a sieve" and insisted the U.S. needed a "physical barrier" to deter illegal border crossers.
"We asked him to give us one good reason - I asked him directly", Schumer said.
With the shutdown lumbering through its second week, Trump made a number of false claims about the wall in the hours leading up to the meeting, and Democrats sought to preempt the White House gathering by saying they had no plans to be lectured with inaccurate information. The House is expected to pass that plan shortly after Democrats take control of the lower chamber when the new Congress is gaveled in on Thursday.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy revealed the details with reporters after the meeting, which took place at the Situation Room with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. "If you build a 30-foot wall from El Paso to Brownsville, the 35-foot ladder business gets real good".
President Donald Trump warned today the United States federal government may not fully reopen any time soon, as he stood firm on his demand for billions of dollars in funding for a border wall with Mexico.
"If they knew they couldn't come through, they wouldn't even start", Mr Trump said at a meeting joined by Cabinet secretaries and top advisers.

The partial government shutdown began on December 22 after Trump refused to sign a budget deal that didn't include billions of dollars for his long-promised and long-stalled southern border wall.
As the partial shutdown entered its 12th day on Wednesday, hundreds of thousands of government workers remained home on furlough, while hundreds of thousands of others deemed "essential" were reporting to work but without any certainty of getting paid. This is the Trump equivalent of "read my lips, no new taxes" only in this case I don't think he's likely to reverse course. He said at the time he would be proud to shut down the government over the issue.
The new Congress will gavel into session on Thursday, with Democrats taking over the majority in the House of Representatives.
"It would be the height of irresponsibility and political cynicism for Senate Republicans to now reject the same legislation they have already supported", the Democratic leaders said.
Even if only symbolic, passage of the bills in the House would put fresh pressure on the president.
But first, they'll have to get government reopened from the partial shutdown. At the same time, administration officials said Trump was in no rush for a resolution to the impasse, believing he has public opinion and his base on his side. That measure would provide money through the remainder of the fiscal year, to September 30.
Whether the Republican-led Senate would consider the Democratic funding bills - or if Trump would sign either into law - was unclear. The lawmakers were frustrated that Trump had dismissed their earlier legislation.
But on Tuesday, Trump was openly asking if Democrats were willing to negotiate.
