The president later tweeted that he planned to go to his retreat at Camp David, Maryland, on Sunday morning to discuss borders security and other topics with senior staff in a meeting separate from the negotiations. "It's about safety, it's about security for our country". "The impression you get from the president [is] that he would like to not only close government, build a wall, but also abolish Congress, so that the only voice that mattered was his own". He also asserted: "I want to stop the Shutdown as soon as we are in agreement on Strong Border Security!"

One prominent House Democrat, Adam Schiff, immediately rejected the talk of a national emergency.

"I know that if I was a man it might have been differently", she said Friday in an interview with CNN affiliate WDIV in Detroit. It does not affect a 2.6% pay increase for USA troops that was passed as part of the massive defense spending bill Trump signed in August.

Mick Mulvaney, Trump's acting chief of staff, told NBC's " Meet the Press" that agreeing to a steel barrier would allow Democrats to stick to their refusal to fund a wall.

The president had previously admitted to considering using his emergency powers to build a border wall without congressional approval during a press briefing Friday.

Dozens of high-ranking officials were supposed to see an increase in their salary, while hundreds of thousands of federal employees and government contractors are unsure when they will see their next paychecks amid the partial government shutdown. Large numbers of federal contractors are also losing pay in what is already one of the longest shutdowns in U.S. history.

"V.P. Mike Pence and group had a productive meeting with the Schumer/Pelosi representatives today", Trump wrote.

Trump indicated, however, that he was not expecting a weekend breakthrough, saying there would be "very serious talks come Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday".

He has insisted that the wall is essential to addressing illegal immigration and drug trafficking, while Democrats have slapped the proposal as an "inefficient, unnecessary and costly" solution to strengthening border security.

"The Senate will not waste its time considering a Democratic bill which can not pass this chamber and which the president will not sign", McConnell said Wednesday on the Senate floor. "GOP lost entitlement to policing women's behavior a long time ago". "It really depends on the Democrats".

The fate of those Democratic bills is unclear.

During a town hall event hosted by MSNBC, Pelosi said she herself "wouldn't use" Tlaib's language but added, "I don't think it's anything worse than anything - what the President has said".

But a leading Democrat involved in the negotiations, Senator Dick Durbin, pushed back. The timing also chafed, just hours before congressional leaders were headed to the White House to try to resolve the standoff over the border wall Trump is demanding in exchange for reopening the government. "I'm not going to tell anyone else what to do, but certainly, I think, it would behoove all of us to really be working for the people who need" Congress' help. "I'm sure that the people that are on the receiving end will make adjustments".

The shutdown has left transportation security agents and Federal Bureau of Investigation employees, among many others, working without pay.

"I would like to see [Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell] bring the House-passed bills to the Senate floor".
