Government shutdown could mean delayed tax returns

  • Trump’s shutdown could delay your early tax refund — but it’s not a problem for the rich

A notice on the door of the IRS Tax Assistance Center on N. Woodlawn in Wichita reads it will not reopen until the partial government shutdown ends.

On Friday afternoon, in a press conference at the White House Rose Garden, President Trump told reporters that he is prepared to keep the government closed for months or even years if Democrats do not agree to provide funding for a border wall.

Americans may find themselves missing an agency they usually love to hate if the government shutdown persists: the Internal Revenue Service. "Those temporary workers are out of work due to this shutdown".

File your tax return but don't count on having your refund any time soon. Although tax filing season starts in January, the IRS typically takes a few weeks to start getting refunds out.

As if tax season isn't enough of a headache, a partial government shutdown is making things worse.

That's according to a December shutdown plan that lays out the first five business days of the agency's response during a shutdown occurring outside of tax season. However, if the government doesn't open by then, he said it's nearly guaranteed that refunds will be delayed.

The agency has been part of the government shutdown cut backs, retaining only about 12.5% of their workers.

The IRS normally begins accepting tax returns at the end of January, and early filers can see refunds hit their account as early as February. As the IRS's contingency plan noted, the law's implementation "requires creating or revising hundreds of tax products including worksheets and tax forms, form instructions and publications as well as changes to current IRS policies and procedures". This is also one of the more noticeable functions performed by the IRS that taxpayers would be likely to miss if payments were to be delayed.
