  • ATP Brisbane Kei Nishikori and Daniil Medvedev forge thrilling final

Kei Nishikori ended a three-year wait for a tour title after downing Daniil Medvedev in three sets in Sunday's Brisbane International final.

The 29-year-old is vying for his first title since the Memphis Open in February 2016.

9 won five games in a row to seal the win.

But he played two loose service games in the second and third sets and Medvedev, who saved eight break points on his own serve throughout the match, took full advantage.

Both players held serve through the first set, although the Russian player faced three set points in the 10th game, but he eventually lost the set in a tie break a couple of games later.

A quick break helped Nishikori reset as he built a double break, with the insurance coming in handy when broken serving for the title at 5-1.

Kei Nishikori's strong pre-Australian Open form has continued, the Japanese star demolishing world No.

The former world No 4, who missed seven months of 2018 after knee surgery, looked like he'd never been away and should the Frenchman continue his fine form then he will be regarded as one of the dark horses in Melbourne when the first Grand Slam of 2019 starts on January 14.

In the women's tournament Karolina Pliskova recovered to blaze past Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1 1-6 6-1 and into the Brisbane International semi-finals.

"Maybe first match [against Denis Kudla] was a little bit tight, but after Dimi's [Grigor Dimitrov] match and today's match was nearly ideal, I would say. Playing good tennis [and being] very happy and healthy is one of the best keys for me".

"I think everything was against me today".

"I think we had the great fight until 5-4, and then suddenly, I don't know, maybe she raised her level so much that I was not ready for that".

There were quarter-final wins for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Daniil Medvedev at the Brisbane International on Friday. The Frenchman hit a backhand victor down the line to take his second break and a 5-4 first half lead, before serving out to love to clinch the opener.
