  • US Official Overseeing Mueller Probe to Leave - Reports

Lindsey Graham he would allow special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation to continue unabated, Graham said Wednesday.

Rosenstein has managed the investigation since it began in May 2017.

His former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, also pleaded guilty to a range of crime, including paying a pair of women alleging affairs with the President to keep quiet while Trump was running for office.

Rosenstein and his chief deputy have continued to maintain day-to-day oversight over the probe, a senior Justice Department official told reporters last month. Also, Barr wrote an unsolicited memo to the Justice Department past year critiquing Mueller's investigation into whether the president sought to obstruct justice by firing James Comey as FBI director.

Barr's confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee is set to begin January 15, and The Washington Post reported that Rosenstein does not have a definitive timeline for departure.

Mueller is investigating potential conspiracy between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation as well as whether the president has unlawfully sought to obstruct the probe.

"As attorney general, his job will be to receive Mr. Mueller's report and determine what to do with it", Graham said.

Barr has a confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee next week and could be confirmed within weeks.

Rosenstein has been overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 United States election, accusations that Moscow has repeatedly denied.

In September the New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources, that Mr Rosenstein had discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th amendment of the U.S. constitution, which provides for the removal of a president if he is deemed unfit for office. "I trust his judgement to find a worthy successor to Mr. Rosenstein". Barr would most likely take over that role, since Rosenstein only assumed it after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself. Democrats have called Whitaker a political hack and several legal challenges have been brought against his appointment.

"I haven't spoken to the deputy attorney general myself, so I'll leave any announcements for him or the president to make when they want to do that, but certainly I don't think there's any willingness by the President or the White House to push him out", she noted. "Who replaces him will be extremely critical".

Barr also met with the outgoing committee chairman, Republican Sen.

Rosenstein himself has sought to allay fears about the effect of any one leader on the workings of the Justice Department generally and the Russian Federation investigation specifically.

Mueller and Barr worked together in the early 1990s when Barr was Attorney General under President George H.W. Bush and Mueller was the head of the DOJ's Criminal Division.

Trump has criticized Rosenstein numerous times.

Trump also retweeted an image that was edited to show Rosenstein, Mueller, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and others behind prison bars in November.

Trump has denied collusion with Moscow.
