There will, unfortunately, be no fairytale comeback for Andy Murray.

Murray, 31, has chosen Wimbledon as the swansong for his remarkable career, but he said that the pain was so bad now that he was unsure whether he could compete in July. I can still play to a level, not a level I'm happy playing at.

"I spoke to my team and I told that I can't keep doing this, that I needed to have an end point because (I was) just playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop", he told the news conference Friday. I'm in a better place than I was six months ago but still in a lot of pain. "I tried pretty much everything that I could to get it right - that hasn't worked". "I think there is a chance the Australian Open is my last tournament".

Murray deserves the sendoff at Wimbledon, likely the site of his greatest triumphs.

There were no shocks with the announcements of the top seeds for the men's and women's singles tournaments at the Australian Open, with top-ranked Djokovic and Halep heading the seeds in their respective tournaments.

His fortnights at Wimbledon perennially captivated a British public who normally, in sporting terms, focus on football.

Murray said he would not consider playing on as a doubles specialist but that he hoped he would be pain-free in future.

But Murray enjoyed success elsewhere, too, weaving the magic of his varied repertoire.

Murray has had a celebrated career, breaking long Grand Slam droughts for British men when he won the U.S. Open in 2012 and at Wimbledon the following year - when he was the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the prestigious lawn tennis title.

He walks away with two Wimbledon wins, a US Open title and two Olympic medals.

He finished the season at No. 1 for the first and lone time of his career.

"Absolute legend", said Roddick. Unreal results in a brutal era.nothing but respect here.

"If you'd like to come along and watch my match on Monday or Tuesday I'll sort you a ticket".

Murray had right hip surgery in January 2018 after prolonged problems with the joint.

While he intends to begin his opening-round match against 22nd seed Roberto Bautista Agut next week, how his body withstands potentially gruelling five-set clashes in energy-sapping heat remains to be seen.

"When you search for examples of "emptied the bucket to be as good as they could be" there should be a picture of Andy Murray sitting under that quote," one of Hewitt's ex coaches, Darren Cahill, said on Twitter. Remarkable discipline for training, competition, sacrifice, perfection, a little insane but a legend of a bloke.
