Manafort Allegedly Shared 2016 Polling With Associate Linked To Russian Intelligence

  • Manafort’s Lawyers Accidentally Revealed an Exchange Between the Trump Campaign and a Man Trained by Russian Military Intelligence

The defense filing was aimed at rebutting allegations that Manafort intentionally lied to Mueller's team after agreeing to plead guilty last September.

The Associated Press said it saw a redacted portion of the filing by the Manafort lawyers that wasn't properly blacked out showing that Manafort lied about sharing political polling data with Kilimnik while he was working on the Trump campaign.

Manafort misled prosecutors in debriefings about his communications and a meeting with Konstantin Kilimnik, an associate with ties to Russian intelligence, according to a December 7 filing by Mueller.

Manafort was among the first Americans charged in Mueller's investigation and has been among the central characters in the case, having led the campaign during the Republican convention and as, U.S. intelligence officials say, Russian Federation was working to sway the election in Trump's favor.

Lawyers for Paul Manafort appear to have missed a significant court filing deadline of midnight Tuesday to respond to the special counsel's office's accusation that he lied about five topics during his post-guilty-plea cooperation sessions.

This is the first time prosecutors with Mueller's team have accused President Trump's associate of being in touch with a Russian contact in relation to the presidential election.

They also said that Mueller alleges Manafort was in contact with someone who asked him permission to use Manafort's name "as an introduction" in the event that the person met the president.

Kilimnik has always been suspected to be central to Mueller's investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.

"For several months Mr. Manafort has suffered from severe gout, at times confining him to a wheelchair, " the lawyers wrote.

The Mueller prosecutors, who for 20 months have been investigating Trump campaign links to Russian Federation and whether Trump, as president, tried to illegally obstruct the probe, contended that Manafort lied about least five subjects.

In his filing, Manafort's lawyers said any inconsistencies in those interviews were unintentional and in part attributable to his months in solitary confinement at the Alexandria jail in Virginia, which they say has "taken a toll on his physical and mental health". Until mid-2018, Manafort had a private cell, bathroom, shower, unlimited 15-minute phone calls, a laptop, and other amenities, but his conditions since he was moved to a different prison are likely far more spartan, but haven't been revealed. This includes his connection with former business partner Konstanin Kilimnik, a Ukrainian accused by prosecutors of having ties to Russian intelligence. Later Tuesday, Manafort spokesman Jason Maloni said that meeting was in January or February 2017, after Trump was elected. Mueller broke off the plea agreement November 26 telling a judge who will oversee sentencing that Manafort continued to commit crimes, which violated the arrangement.

Manafort's lawyers responded that any such conversation did "not constitute outreach by Mr Manafort to the President" and said the prosecution's second example was "hearsay". Manafort "lied in multiple ways and on multiple occasions", prosecutors wrote, saying "these were not instances of mere memory lapses".

Mueller's team also indicted Kilimnik for witness tampering in Manafort's case.

The ex-Trump aide had been hoping for leniency at his 5 March sentencing under the plea deal.
