White House press secretary Sarah Sanders responded quickly to a Friday New York Times report claiming that President Donald Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey led officials to begin investigating "whether he had been working on behalf of Russian Federation against American interests".

During the campaign, FBI officials were troubled by Trump's ties to Russia, and opened an investigation into the campaign in August 2016, two months after the Trump Tower meeting between campaign senior officials and Russian surrogates.

Trump and his allies have repeatedly criticized Mueller's investigation, calling it a "witch hunt" and questioning the political motivations of his investigators.

"No evidence has emerged publicly that Trump was secretly in contact with or took direction from Russian government officials", The New York Times said.

The White House on Friday night dismissed The New York Times report as "absurd".

"This is absurd. James Comey was sacked because he's a disgraced partisan hack, and his Deputy Andrew McCabe, who was in charge at the time, is a known liar fired by the Federal Bureau of Investigation". She also disputed that Trump had ever been soft on Russian Federation. Investigators have examined key episodes such as Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and his fury over the recusal from the investigation of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Giuliani also tried to shrug off the revelation accidentally made by former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort's lawyers in an unredacted court filing that Manafort had apparently shared internal campaign polling with a colleague with reported ties to Russian intelligence.

The bill's Republican sponsors don't believe that Trump will try to fire the special counsel.

The justification went beyond Trump's firing of Comey, CNN said, according to its sources, and included the President's conversation with Comey in the Oval Office asking him to drop the investigation into his former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

There has been no public evidence that Trump was in contact with Russian Federation during the election campaign and Trump has long denied any illicit connection.

CNN reported that counterintelligence agents were investigating why Trump was acting in ways that seemed to benefit Russian Federation.

The Mueller investigation is set to continue to cast a cloud over the White House: a judge has given an extension to the secret grand jury empanelled in the probe, extending its original 18-month mandate. Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort in August 2018 was convicted of financial crisis and later pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. and conspiring to obstruct justice.
