Federal Bureau of Investigation protests missed pay & air traffic controllers sue as shutdown breaks records

The previous record for a government shutdown was 21 days under former president Bill Clinton. This comes as the shutdown was officially recognised as the longest in history.

The screeners are among the lowest-paid federal employees. Why does this matter?

Continuing to offer his support, Pekoske acknowledged that although the pay wasn't worth all that the workers are owed, he hopes "these actions alleviate some of the financial hardship many of you are facing".

Even though the callouts represent just 5.1% of the agency total employees, it has caused enough of a disruption for Miami International Airport to close one its terminals for part of this weekend. The area has 15 gates.

The terminal serves United Airlines along with smaller carriers.

Here is a roundup of recent developments in the partial government shutdown's impact on air travel.

That same concourse will shut down around the same time Sunday and Monday.

Nationally, Micheal Bilello, assistant administrator for public affairs, tweeted over the weekend that 99.8 percent of passengers had to wait less than the TSA standard of 30 minutes at checkpoints.

More than 51,000 airport security screeners are required to work through the government shutdown -despite the agency's inability to provide them their regular pay - until it secures congressional funding from lawmakers in Washington. Passengers with flights scheduled to depart from Terminal B are being directed to the ticket counters and TSA checkpoints located in Terminal C and Terminal E.

Why Is The Airport Short Of Essential Staff?

The Airport Authority plans to continue providing the lunches on Fridays to federal workers until the government is reopen.

Democrats say Trump shut the government in a "temper tantrum" by refusing to sign bipartisan funding legislation past year that did not include money for his wall.

"It's demoralizing, because you go to work, and you expect pay for hard work and you wake up and your bank account is empty", Keys said. This is a choice that many workers have had to face, especially those who have a longer commute.

An airport spokesman, Greg Chin, told the Miami Herald on Thursday, however, that federal screeners were calling in sick at double the normal rate and that managers of the Transportation Security Administration, which runs the checkpoint security, weren't sure whether they'd be able to operate all of the airport's checkpoints at normal hours. In fact, Simple Flying has learnt that some employees have been forced to quit as a result of the shutdown.

Some 800,000 federal workers have been affected by the ongoing partial shutdown. Let us know in the comments down below.
